Overland is a turn-based survival strategy game set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland overrun by monsters. As a stranded survivor, you'll gather a squad of allies, scavenge for supplies and do battle with monsters. Oh, and die. You'll die quite a lot, but at least you're going to look good.
Every point is precious
Overland features a simple, stylised aesthetic that's both visually appealing and easy to understand. The isometric perspective gives you a good tactical view of the environment. The heart of the game is an action point economy that will be familiar if you've played other turn-based strategy games like the XCOM franchise. The strict limits of the system mean you'll be forced to make tough choices, balancing risk against potential reward. Between missions you have to choose your next destination, rationing the available fuel and choosing which targets to prioritise. The map is divided into regions, the transition between regions is marked by a challenging roadblock battle. The system presents interesting -- but difficult -- strategic choices. Over time, your characters have a chance to earn new traits, which can grant them special abilities or resistances, adding a fun RPG-like element.
Get out on the highway
If you're a fan of turn-based strategy games and don't mind a little extra resource management -- and a high difficulty level -- then Overland might be the post-apocalyptic challenge you've been looking for.
